The BCL President’s Message:
When I accepted the position of President of the Brookview Community League I thought, “this won’t be hard”. I soon realized that I accepted the position in the midst of change in our community – at the community league and at BCAL, our homeowners association. I have had a steep learning curve.
I assumed the president’ position from Elmar Klapstein who has been on the board first as the Treasurer (for 4 years) and then the president for the past six years. We are very grateful for his years of stewardship.
At the same time that Elmar stepped down, Harold Hornig, the long term president of BCAL also stepped aside. Luckily, BCAL selected a very capable president in Kurtis Kaminsky. The two associations are working on reinforcing a united front for a strong Brookview.
BCL’s longterm goals are to ensure that the Greenspace project by the school is a completed and is a recreational ‘jewel’ for our community. The Brookview ice rink which is one of the city’s best outdoor rinks, must be rebuilt or replaced in the next couple of years so planning for and raising the funds for the rink is a high priority. Another Terwillegar transportation plan has been released so BCL will be ready to represent Brookview’s interests to the city.
In the shorter term, we are excited about the many recreational and cultural programs we organize for Brookview. For this winter, we are getting ready to offer programs like the Learn to Skate, ice rink, and cross country skiing. Next summer we want to ensure children’s activities like Green Shack will be funded for BCL members and we are enthusiastic about the various community boosting initiatives like Yards in Bloom, Snow Angels, and of course our highly successful Movie Night.
BCL depends on many volunteers for our community services and events so we want to thank everyone who pitches in with their time for our community. There are many roles you can play from helping with rink or the Movie Night to sitting on the board. Don’t be shy; come join us in making Brookview a better place to live.
